How the calculation works

Position sizing is the one habit that separates traders who last from those who blow up. Instead of guessing a lot size, you decide how much of your account you're willing to lose on a trade, and let the distance to your stop set the size. The math:

risk amount = balance × risk %
risk / unit = | entry − stop |
position size = risk amount ÷ risk per unit

So on a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100), with an entry at 100 and a stop at 98 (a $2 risk per unit), you'd size 50 units, because 50 × $2 = exactly the $100 you chose to risk. Widen the stop and the size shrinks; tighten it and the size grows. Your dollar risk stays fixed, which is the whole point.

Common questions

How do you calculate position size?

Multiply your account balance by the percentage you are willing to risk to get your risk amount, then divide that by the distance between your entry and your stop-loss. On a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100) with an entry at 100 and a stop at 98, the risk per unit is $2, so the position size is 50 units.

How do I calculate lot size for MT4 or MT5?

MT4 and MT5 take order volume in lots. For forex, one standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, so divide the position size in units by 100,000 to get standard lots (a mini lot is 0.1 and a micro lot is 0.01). Metals, indices and CFDs can use different contract sizes, so check the symbol specification in your terminal.

Does this position size calculator work for crypto and stocks?

Yes. The formula only needs your balance, risk percentage, entry and stop-loss, so it works for crypto, stocks, forex and most CFDs. For crypto and stocks the result in units is the number of coins or shares to buy or sell.

What risk per trade should I use?

There is no single right number, and this is not financial advice. Many traders keep risk between 0.5% and 2% of the account per trade so a losing streak cannot do serious damage. Funded and prop-firm accounts often call for the lower end because of their daily and maximum loss limits. See how risk per trade changes your odds with the risk of ruin calculator.

This calculator is an educational tool, not financial or investment advice. It assumes a linear profit/loss per unit of price (true for spot, forex and most CFDs); instruments with contract multipliers or variable pip values may differ. You are responsible for your own trading decisions.
