Free forex trading bot: what to check before you install one
Searching for a free forex trading bot turns up expert advisors, Telegram bots, broker tools and free tiers of paid software. Some are honest, some are bait. This guide explains what "free" usually means, the costs that sit behind it, and the checks to run before anything trades on your account.
What gets sold as a free forex trading bot
- Free expert advisors. Files you load into your own MT5 terminal, shared on forums and marketplaces. They run only while your terminal is open.
- Broker-linked bots. Free to use if you open and fund an account with a specific broker. The provider is often paid through that relationship.
- Free tiers of paid services. A limited version of a commercial product, designed to let you try it before paying.
Each can be legitimate. Each also has costs that are not on the download page.
The hidden costs of free
- Running time. An EA on your own terminal stops when your computer sleeps, restarts or loses its connection. Keeping it running around the clock usually means paying for a VPS.
- Trading costs. A bot that requires a particular broker may come with wider spreads or higher commission than you would otherwise pay. Over many trades this adds up.
- Your time. Updates, broken settings and terminal crashes are yours to handle.
- The logic itself. This is the largest cost. A free bot that doubles its position after every loss, or keeps adding to a losing trade, can look excellent for weeks and then lose the account in one move.
Safety checklist before you install a free bot
- Know the source. Prefer reputable marketplaces or code you can read. Do not run files sent to you in direct messages.
- Look for martingale and grid behavior. Check the settings and the trade history for position sizes that grow after losses, or many open trades in the same direction.
- Confirm every trade has a stop loss. A bot without stops has no defined maximum loss per trade.
- Never share account passwords with strangers. Anyone asking for your login to "set up the bot" should be refused.
- Test on demo first. Run it on an MT5 demo account for long enough to see losing periods as well as winning ones.
- Check news behavior. See what it does around major economic releases, when spreads widen and prices jump.
- Read your broker or prop firm rules. Some accounts restrict third-party EAs, copy trading or certain strategies.
Trading bot or signal copier?
These are often confused, but they work differently.
- A trading bot makes its own decisions. You are trusting its logic.
- A signal copier executes decisions made by a signal provider you chose, on Telegram, Discord or WhatsApp, using risk rules you set. You are trusting the provider's judgment and the copier's execution.
If you already follow a provider and enter their trades by hand, a copier removes the manual work and the delay. If you do not follow anyone, a copier has nothing to copy. Read more about how copy trading works.
What Signal Copier Pro offers free, and what is paid
Signal Copier Pro is a signal copier, not a bot that trades on its own ideas. Its free tier covers crypto: it can copy signals to Binance, Bybit or MEXC using trade-only API keys with withdrawals disabled, and it never holds your funds. Copying to MT5 forex accounts is on paid forex plans, which start from $49 per month, and paid crypto plans start from $49.99 per month. Check the pricing page for current details.
Because it runs on hosted servers 24/7, there is no VPS to rent and your computer can be off. Forex execution uses the MT5 desktop terminal through a with-EA or a without-EA method. For a setup walk-through, see Telegram to MT5.
A low-cost way to start safely
Whatever tool you choose, the cheapest mistakes happen on a demo account. Set a fixed risk per trade with the position size calculator, run the bot or copier on demo, and keep a simple log of every trade, including the ones that were skipped. Only move to a live account once the behavior matches what you expected, and start with a small size.
Frequently asked questions
Are free forex trading bots safe?
Some are, but many are not. The main risks are logic that increases size after losses, trades without stop losses, and files from unknown sources. Check the source, inspect the trade history for martingale or grid behavior, and test on a demo account first.
Is there a free way to copy Telegram signals to MT5?
Signal Copier Pro's free tier covers crypto exchanges. Copying signals to MT5 forex accounts is on paid forex plans, which start from $49 per month. Check the pricing page for current details.
Do I need a VPS to run a forex bot?
An expert advisor running on your own terminal only works while that terminal is open, so 24/7 operation usually needs a VPS or a computer that never sleeps. Signal Copier Pro is hosted, so it keeps running while your computer is off.
Can I use a free bot on a prop firm account?
It depends on the firm and the specific account. Many firms have rules about third-party EAs, copy trading and certain strategies. Read your firm's current rules before connecting any automation.
